Every year, thousands of student members worldwide come together to solve complex algorithmic problems under tight time constraints. ☝️ But a global event of this scale only works because of the bridges built between students, academic proctors, and professional volunteers.

As we gear up for IEEEXtreme 20.0, we are rallying two key groups:

SINGAPORE — I spent an incredibly insightful day at the MDPI Singapore’s Engineering Editors’ Salon, surrounded by a room comprised entirely of the Editorial Board Members, Guest Editors and academic leaders. ⚜️🌟

💡 With the day’s themes centered around responsible AI governance and AI in publishing ✍️, it was a true privilege to delve into these critical conversations alongside established engineering professors from local research ecosystem like from National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

As generative AI continues to reshape academia, establishing robust governance frameworks is no longer optional. It is a necessity! We had an engaging, multi-faceted discussions/presentations tracking the full lifecycle of AI integration in scientific publishing:

✅ Authorship & Manuscript Writing: Setting clear ethical boundaries for how researchers utilize AI as a collaborative tool without compromising academic integrity or original contribution.

✅ Peer Review Process: Reaffirming that peer review relies on the authentic knowledge and subject-matter expertise of human reviewers; manuscripts must never be uploaded into generative AI tools to strictly preserve author confidentiality and data privacy.

✅ Editorial Decision-Making: Defining the human-in-the-loop safeguards required to ensure AI remains a supportive analytical tool, rather than the final arbitrator of acceptance.

💭 Engaging with Singapore’s leading academic gatekeepers on these pivotal challenges was both humbling and deeply motivating. Another week, another opportunity to pause and recalibrate.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are no longer ‘coming’ because they're here. Generative AI (tools like Claude, Gemini, Copilot, ChatGPT) sits on desktop, in our browser, workflows, virtual meetings platforms, and quick searches. 👨🏻‍💻🔎

But how often do we ask: What's actually happening under the hood?

Large Language Models (LLMs) power these conversational interfaces. They're a specialized subset of Natural Language Processing (NLP), deeply intertwined with Machine Learning (ML) yet often treated as a black box. 💡🤖 Understanding the evolution, limitations, and practical levers of LLMs isn't just for AI specialists. It's for anyone who #builds, #teaches, or #leads with technology.

Some Circles Just Keep Coming Back Positively at MBS ✨

 

SINGAPORE—The 48th AGM edition of the IEEE Singapore Section was held at the iconic Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. I found myself in that rare kind of ballroom: where handshakes turn into “what are you doing now?”, that quiet nod across the room, and networking tea over family, failed experiments, and manuscript review processes. 

So glad to reconnect with IEEE #leadership, world top universities professors, researchers, old friends, #passionate volunteers and STEM students who are contributing to different technology verticals and education sectors in Singapore. Special shoutout to all those who always stood beside me and now I could finally thank them in person. 🙏

🎁🎉 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬

Moments like these remind me: technical (research) communities aren’t just about publishing papers and applying grant projects. They’re about sharing expert knowledge and continuity of trust, standards, and shared purpose. 

The dinner was fabulous. Seriously, well done to the team and leadership by Dr Michael Ong, Chair, IEEE Singapore Section. This community has shaped my career in ways no CV can capture. It’s where I learned that rigor and kindness aren’t opposites, they’re requirements.

SINGAPORE—Most researchers learn procurement 𝐛𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠. And 𝐛𝐲 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠. This session fills the gap. Procurement isn’t one-sided. Neither is this first task.

The organization also trains project managers to evaluate vendors — shortlist, score, select. But rarely do they step into the room holding your hands across the table.

The discussions spanned across industries and sectors, in Singapore and Asia, from cloud infrastructure, finance to real estate management. 🏭⚙️ 

💬 One thread tied them all together: 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (AI) as the backbone of automation and decision-making processes across industries. We can see how the newer versions of the 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 (LLM) evolve, reshape businesses and how we do businesses globally. 🌍💼

The Age of AI has Arrived with Agentic AI

 

There’s lots of hype online that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help us in many ways using Large Language Models (LLMs) like 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐆𝐏𝐓, 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐤, etc. 💭 I’ve been thinking a lot about how AI can actually help us 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫—and I put together this simple diagram to show one way it’s happening!

🤖 Agentic AI is a type of AI that can make uncomplex decisions and take predefined actions independently. It uses machine learning, LLMs, and enterprise automation to perform tasks and solve real life problems.

AI agents can in fact take on 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘴 in research projects or project management—like

✅ Cleaning and analyzing data for a science experiment,
✅ Keeping milestones track,
✅ Preparing your slides,
✅ Drafting your project charter,
✅ Even organizing multi parties meeting slots, etc.

It’s like having a super-smart teammate who can suggest next steps and 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠. But here’s the catch: we humans still need to be in the loop, double-checking the AI’s work and making the big and often complex decisions it can’t handle alone. 👨‍💻

💬 Another common question I get from senior researchers is why I haven't been publishing a lot despite working on many projects.

Well, not all projects allow for publication, especially those with 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 content. Many of the industry projects (research collaboration agreements) I've worked on involve 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 that should be kept within the parties to maintain a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞.

Perhaps an additional metric to track research papers 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐑𝐋 and the types of projects [grant/industry] to assess research competency?

Updated the page on Distributed Fibre Sensing (DFS) with some inputs from an expert in the field . Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) are both pretty off the shelves products 🤓

Introduction 

DFS is the short form for distributed fibre sensing (or distributed fibre optics sensor). It is the ultra long sensing distance type of fiber optic sensors. Most of the time ordinary optical fiber (single mode fiber) may be used to sense for heat changes in existing infrastructure such as smart nation applications. Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) systems are the most commercial available DFS system in the market today. Their typical sensing spatial resolution is 1 meter with 1 degree Celsius accuracy in very ideal conditions. Wealthy end user such as those in oil and gas industry use Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) system for acoustic sensing. In practical use cases, DAS are greatly affected by environment (wind, thunder, etc.) and human activities (machinery alike disturbance, false intrusion, etc.) if present.
